The Lightness of Darkness

This election has really gotten to me. I’ve even been warned by friends to lighten up. And I agree. I have to lighten the hell up about it. *deep breath* Here’s my thoughts on this though: My love for this country gets kicked up and riled up with this embarrassing candidate. I see very clearly that Trump is seriously dangerous. We are talking about the safety of the entire world here. Its clear he brings out the racism and hate in so many of us. I hope this experience helps us see that darkness – its pretty clear when you look.

Darkness is not only within so many of Trumps followers but also within ourselves. After all, what rattles us as individuals points to something within ourselves that is in need of healing. While Trump is clearly the most obvious example ever to run for this high office, this darkness has been around a long time. As a Social Workers it was clear to me that Reagan’s policies ruined this country for lots of people with that trickle down bullshit – I saw the damage it did to veterans, the poor, the mentally ill. Homelessness was not a problem until then. Separating rich from poor, corporation from workers, business owners from employees – it all just separates each of us as people and deludes us into thinking we could actually be fulfilled without being a part of the larger humanity. But each of our struggles do matter. Each and every one is precious and it has an impact on all of us in some way. We hurt ourselves when we forget that. We are still trying to repair that damage from Reagan’s trickle down. Now we have someone far far worse in terms of complete contempt for others, his narcissism, and selfish interest in attaining power to satisfy his sick ego. Yet I don’t believe we’ve ever totally lost our decency, our brotherly and sisterly love, and our sense of community. In fact, we all crave that. But love can hide – especially when people are struggling to make enough to eat and pay for a place to live. Its so easy to forget how much we want to love. But we are so happy when we do love our fellow humans in all their forms. Our government SHOULD care for all of us. Not in hand outs but in hand ups, opportunities, education, care for those who need it, healing of both the body and especially the mind and soul. We need a leader who cares about the value of each individual. We need a leader who works for an environment that supports, encourages, educates and trains everyone to become the highest expression of themselves. Obama has been that. Michelle Obama has been that. Hillary Clinton will be that. Gerri Ratigan
